Comment on Message Board Solar Flares - Mutiple Solar flares took place around Sprawling Sunspot 1158 on Sunday, including an M6.6 Flare which was the 2nd largest of Cycle 24 thus far. Unfortunatly it does not look like any large earth directed CME's are incoming at this time. There will continue to be a chance for M-Class flares and NOAA also lists a 5% chance for an X-Class event.
    M6.6 Flare Movie (Thanks AF4EX)
Solar Flux 107 - For the first time in Cycle 24, the official daily solar flux number measured in Penticton, BC closed above 100. The solar flux of 107 is the highest since September 2005. The last time the solar flux finished above 100 was in December 2006.
Solar Update - Huge sunspot 1158 which is located in the southern hemisphere will continue to be a threat for strong solar flares. Elsewhere, Sunspot 1157 which is in the northern hemisphere showed growth late on Sunday and Sunspot 1160 which rotated into view on the eastern limb has sprouted a few new spots as well. The M6.6 Solar Flare did cause a Radio Blackout on HF which was short lived.

SDF Number 044 Issued at 2200Z on 13 Feb 2011

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 12/2100Z
to 13/2100Z: Solar activity has been high. Region 1158 (S20W03)
produced an M6/1N flare at 13/1738Z associated with a 130 sfu
Tenflare and a Type II radio sweep (estimated velocity 1119 km/s).
Region 1158 grew in area and developed a complex E-type sunspot
group with a beta-gamma magnetic classification. Region 1157
(N18W30) and Region 1159 (N19W01) both grew slightly but remain
magnetically simple while Region 1160 (N16E74) decayed to spotless
    plage.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low
to moderate with a chance for a major x-ray event for days one thru
three (14-16 February). Region 1158 continued growth and recent
major flare make this region the most likely source for a major
    event.
There is a slight chance for C-class activity from Region
    1157 and Region 1159.

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 12/2100Z to 13/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field has been quiet. Solar wind data from the ACE
satellite indicate a drop in solar wind velocity to approximately
    310 km/s.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be predominately quiet on day one (14 February). Quiet
to unsettled with a chance for active conditions are expected on
days two and three (15-16 February), due to a recurrent coronal hole
    high speed stream becoming geoeffective.

Major Flare (X2.2) / Solar Update [IMG]
    02/15/2011 by Kevin VE3EN at 02:20

Comment on Message Board X2.2 Major Solar Flare - Massive Sunspot 1158 has produced a major X2.2 Class Solar Flare at 01:56 UTC Tuesday. This is the largest Solar Flare of Cycle 24 and a CME could be associated with this event. A strong R3 Radio Blackout has taken place as well. More to follow.
X2.2 Flare captured by GOES SXI (Tuesday)
Solar Flux 113 - The solar flux is again at a new high of 113. This beats out Sunday's reading of 107 and this is the highest it has been since September of 2005.
Solar Update / Aurora Watch - There will continue to be a chance for strong solar flares around Sunspot 1158. This region has a BETA-Gamma magnetic configuration which should keep it very active over the next 24-48 hours.
With all of the flare activity taking place over the past 72 hours, there will be a chance for geomagnetic storming at high latitudes should any effects from CME activity take place. More information will follow should a CME be on its way due to the X2.2 Flare early on Tuesday.

Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 045 Issued at 2200Z on 14 Feb 2011

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 13/2100Z
to 14/2100Z: Solar activity has been moderate Region 1158 (S21W14)
produce an M2/1N flare at 14/1745Z associated with a 150 sfu
Tenflare and a Type II radio sweep (estimated velocity 1479 km/s).
Region 1158 also produced seven C-class events the largest being a
C9 at 14/1253. This region continued to grow throughout the period
and is currently magnetically classified as a Beta-gamma type
spotgroup with an area of 450 millionths.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be low
to moderate with a chance for an M5 or greater x-ray event for days
    one thru three (15-17 February).

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 13/2100Z to 14/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field has been quiet to active. A sudden impulse was
observed at 14/1600Z (12nT, as measured by the Boulder USGS
magnetometer). Solar wind data from the ACE satellite indicated a
shock arrival at 14/1456Z. Solar wind velocities increased to
approximately 410 km/s and total field increased to around 20 nT
following the shock. The source of todays activity is likely an
east limb event that occurred at 11/2146Z. The greater than 2 MeV
electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during the
    period.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be predominately quiet to unsettled with isolated active
periods on day one (15 February). There is a slight chance for
isolated minor storm periods on days two and three (16-17 February).
The increase is forecast due to the expected return of a recurrent
coronal hole high speed stream and the arrival of a CME from
    yesterdays M6 event.

Significant magnetic flux suggests a significant storm of charged particles will be hitting the Earth's magnetic field with 8 - 42 hours.

Mitch Battros presents fascinating, and sometimes shocking, research from the world's top scientists. After years of dialogue with these experts, Mitch has been accepted into the guarded halls of NASA, NOAA, ESA, Royal Observatory, the US Naval Observatory and other highly esteemed scientific bodies. In addition to the latest research on the Sun's influence on our "weather".

Mitch also presents ground-breaking evidence of how the Sun and other celestial orbs produce 'charged particles' and their impact on humanity.

Just as the Sun's solar activity affects the Earth's magnetic field which has a dramatic affect on Earth's "weather" i.e. earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, hurricanes; so does this wave of electrical currents affect the human body's magnetic field. Mitch also reveals a little-known development from modern medicine known as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). TMS provides empirical evidence of how magnetic fields can influence human emotions.

Solar Cycle 24 has begun - and it has been predicted by NASA, NOAA and ESA to be up to 50% stronger than its 'record breaking' predecessor Cycle 23 which produced the largest solar flare ever recorded. The Sun will reach its 'apex' (maximum) in late 2011 into 2012.

"I believe it will be the magnetic influence produced by the Sun which will usher in what is described by our ancient ancestors as "the transition" bringing us to a new state-of-being". (Mitch Battros)

    Event: Event into space
Location: USA State of Pennsylvania Near Philadelphia Navy Yard Philadelphia

Situation: A daytime fireball seen today from Philadelphia, New York City, New Jersey and other parts of the east coast turned heads and made waves. Over 20 AMS reports were filed within an hour of the fall and almost all of them put the space rock somewhere in the Atlantic. The image below represents the plotting of the witness reports received by the AMS website in the first hour of this fall. 20+ reports in 1 hour for a daytime fireball, means this was a significant meteor event. The red person icon means the witness saw the meteor traveling left to right. The green icon means the person saw the meteor traveling right to left. The green line is the direction the witness first saw the fireball. The yellow line is where they last saw it. The red line is my ‘quick guess’ at the path of this fireball based on early reports.

MAJOR FLARE: Earth-orbiting satellites have detected the strongest solar flare in more than four years. At 0156 UT on Feb. 15th, giant sunspot 1158 unleashed an X2-class eruption. X-flares are the strongest type of x-ray flare, and this is the first such eruption of new Solar Cycle 24. The explosion that produced the flare also sent a solar tsunami rippling through the sun's atmosphere and, more importantly, hurled a coronal mass ejection toward Earth. This raises the possibility of geomagnetic storms in the days ahead.

Major Flare (X2.2) / Full Halo CME [IMG]
    02/15/2011 by Kevin VE3EN at 02:20
Comment on Message Board UPDATE - It appears a full halo CME was associated with the X2.2 Flare. I created this Movie with the STEREO website using the COR2 Behind data.
X2.2 makes waves on the sun - Watch Movie

X2.2 Major Solar Flare - The sun showed some love on Valentines Day. Massive Sunspot 1158 has produced a major X2.2 Class Solar Flare at 01:56 UTC Tuesday. This is the largest Solar Flare of Cycle 24 and a CME could be associated with this event. A strong R3 Radio Blackout has taken place as well.

Tenflare and a Type II radio sweep
    (estimated velocity 1479 km/s).

III. Event Probabilities 15 Feb-17 Feb
    Class M 30/30/30
    Class X 05/05/05

Silver Streaks in the Sky Likely a Meteor

Residents from NJ, NY, CT and Pa. report streaks of silver in the sky

    By JOHN NOEL

"A streak of silver and then a flash with crazy colors." That's how one person on Twitter described the celestial phenomenon seen by thousands of people across five states.

    Around 12:30 p.m. Monday
a fireball appeared in the sky over Pennsylvania, traveling east for hundreds of miles.

Scientists say it most certainly was a large meteor, a piece of an asteroid or a comet that falls through the earth's atmosphere.

This latest meteor, one scientist says, was probably the size of a car and from its trajectory likely landed somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.

Professor Jon Friedrich says while meteors fall to earth on a daily basis, "It is unusual to see one so bright in the middle of the day."

Sunspot 1158 has exploded again, this time producing a X2.2 Class Solar Flare. It also caused an R3 Radio Black Out on the on sunlit side of Earth.

The storm should hit the Earth about the time the sun it coming up on the East coast of the united states, so a majority of the energy should be directed at the Atlantic Ocean.

Solar storms like this usually only last for a few hours, so most of the energy should be absorbed before the sun reaches it zenith on the East Coast. If for some reason the storm slows down, as they sometimes do, more of the energy will be directed towards the East Coast.

This storm was pretty well tracked and was actually predicted by several solar weather agencies around the world, so most satellite operators should have ample warning to get their systems in safe mode. It may cause temporary disruption of services, but it shouldn't permanently damage any satellites. Radio communications may be temporarily disrupted as well, though it may only reduce the range of radio transmissions rather than black them out.

During the initial blast wave that hits the Earth, it may cause some beautiful aurora in both the southern and northern hemispheres. North America, should have a beautiful view in the early morning hours as far south as Utah. During this early blast wave, our magnetosphere will quake and will also allow more radiation through than normal. It is possible that air traffic will be rerouted or even possibly canceled during the early part of the storm.

The CMA's space weather monitoring center reported that it had spotted the X2.2-class solar flare at 9:56 a.m. Tuesday Beijing Time. Xue Bingsen, a researcher with the center, said the solar flare caused sudden ionospheric disturbances in the atmosphere above China and affected shortwave radio communications, according to a CMA statement. A solar flare is a violent explosion in the sun's atmosphere caused by huge magnetic activity. The flares produce large amounts of radiation that can affect the Earth's ionosphere and disrupt radio communications. The space weather monitoring center said there is a high probability that large solar flares will appear in the next three days.

Official sources, however, could not confirm the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) as the nation did not have the equipment to measure incidence of earthquakes or tremors. It said the Geological Survey Department charged with detecting and measuring the level of earthquakes and tremors nationwide on a Richter scale was currently ineffective because it lacked the equipment to perform its mandate. The source said the Department was yet to install a new equipment to replace an obsolete one and until the installation at a new location at Achimota was completed, little could be done about the situation. It said there was the need to install the equipment at Achimota because the Ridge Office was too close to residential and commercial activities and ideally the equipment should be located far away from residential areas. However, the source said there were smaller versions of the equipment installed in some of the Regions to measure the incidence of such occurrences.

Shinmoedake began erupting in late January, in its biggest activity in some 300 years. The volcanic activity has disrupted airline flights and blanketed nearby vegetable farms with ash, but there have been no reports of serious injury or deaths. The Japan Meteorological Agency expected rainfall of more than 4 mm (0.16 inch) per hour to last until Thursday night, an amount that the local government said could cause mudslides. The official, in the city of Miyakonojo, said 63 people had moved to evacuation centres by midday. The town of Takaharu, located at the foot of 1,421 metre (4,662 ft) mountain on the southern island of Kyushu, also advised about 250 residents and a business to prepare for evacuation in case it was necessary.
