The Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said a close inspection confirmed additional cases of the disease at a pig farm in the city’s Dong district. Before the latest outbreak, a pig farm in Busan’s Saha district had been the last to be affected by the disease Monday last week. Pigs in the affected farm in Daejeon were vaccinated on Jan. 30 and Feb. 5. On the outbreak of the disease despite the vaccination, the ministry said, “Vaccination doesn’t guarantee complete immunization against the disease,” adding, “Given that suspicious symptoms were found several days ago, we judged that the virus came from affected areas nearby such as those in South Chungcheong Province. Epidemiological studies are underway.” Since Friday, more than 100 pigs have died in the farm in Daejeon. Quarantine authorities will cull more than 2,100 pigs at the farm to prevent the disease from spreading. Including Daejeon, the disease has hit 10 metropolitan cities and provinces and 70 lower-level administrative areas nationwide, sparing just Seoul, Ulsan, Gwangju, the two Jeolla provinces and Jeju Island. The number of animals culled has reached 3,333,496.

The Clark County child was on Horizon Air flight 2614 in addition to the Horizon Air area of Concourse A, gates 6 to 12 and baggage claim area 2 at about 7:20 to 7:30 p.m. Health officials say because the measles virus is airborne, there was a risk of exposure for people in these areas between 7:20 and 9:20 p.m. Anyone who was exposed and isn’t considered immune is asked to call their health care provider or Multnomah County Communicable Disease Services at 503-988-3406. Clark County health officials reported the child was at Evergreen Pediatrics in Vancouver and Southwest Washington Medical Center's outpatient laboratory Monday while contagious. The child was diagnosed after returning from a trip to India with his family. Passengers and crew members have been notified about the possible exposure, according to officials. Symptoms of the measles include a rash, fever, cough, conjunctivitis, sneezing, nasal congestion and nasal discharge.

    Situation:
About 8,600 chickens in a farm here have been culled following the detection of bird flu. The chickens of 'Shahi Poultry Farm' at Dingadoba Ghoshpara in the city were dumped after the culling on Wednesday night. The owner of the farm Abul Kashem said that the chickens started dying a few days ago. He later informed the livestock officers about the incident. District livestock officer Azizul Islam told bdnews24.com that a sample from an infected chicken had been sent to the Central Diseases Investigation Laboratory (CDIL) in Dhaka for tests two days ago. After the confirmation of the infection, chicken culling stared around 9pm on Wednesday. District executive magistrate Alamgir Kabir and others of district administration were present during the culling of the poultry birds, which is the first case of bird flu infection in Rajshahi this year.

    ไข้หวัดนก H1N1 ระบาดในพนมเปญ เขมร ตายไปแล้วสอง ติดเชื้ออีก 7

    Event: Epidemic Hazard
Location: Cambodia Capital City Phnom Penh
    Number of Deads: 2 person(s)
    Number of Infected: 7 person(s)

    Situation:

Cambodia announced Wednesday that a 19-year-old woman and her 11-month-old son died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu, bringing to three the country's death toll from the virus this month. A joint statement released by the Cambodian Health Ministry and the World Health Organization said the woman died on Feb. 12 and the boy on Feb. 17, adding they contracted the virus from eating and preparing sick poultry while visiting relatives. The two lived in Banteay Meanchey Province, some 400 kilometers northwest of the capital Phnom Penh. A 5-year-old girl from Phnom Penh died on Feb. 4 as a result of respiratory complications from H5N1. The virus normally spreads between sick poultry but it can sometimes spread from poultry to humans. It does not spread easily between humans, differing in that respect from the milder H1N1 bird flu virus. The statement said that from 2003 to Feb. 23, there have been 13 laboratory-confirmed cases of H5N1 infection in humans in Cambodia, 11 of who died. Globally, since 2003, there have been 522 laboratory-confirmed cases of avian influenza with 309 related deaths.

    Event: Epidemic Hazard
Location: Cambodia Banteay Meanchey Province Mongkol Borei District Number of Infected: 2 person(s)

    Situation:
Health authorities are on high alert for bird flu on the Thai-Cambodian border near Aranyaprathet after two Cambodians were reported to have died from the virus. The two confirmed cases - a 21-year-old mother and an 11-month-old son - were sent to Mongkolburi Hospital in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province, opposite Sa Kaeo province. An investigation found the mother slaughtered poultry to eat and developed flu-like symptoms after consuming the H5N1-infected chicken, Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Paijit Warachit said. The mother died on Feb 13 and the son died on Feb 15, he said. "The report of human deaths in the neighbouring country is a sign that bird flu can return to harm us without surveillance," Mr Paijit said. He said Thai epidemiologists were closely monitoring the outbreak along the border. The ministry had so far received no reports of sick and dead poultry in surrounding areas and in Sa Kaeo province close to the outbreak. Health and livestock officials have stepped up operations to control trade of eggs and poultry between Cambodia and Thailand. Wiboon Srimankongtham, chief of the livestock quarantine unit in Sa Kaeo, said officials seized more than 2,500 eggs and five chickens a Cambodian villager had smuggled in from Poi Pet yesterday morning. The eggs and chicken would be buried to prevent possible spread of the bird flu virus. The World Health Organisation reported on Monday bird flu had claimed three lives in Cambodia since January. A total of 310 deaths and 525 cases were confirmed in 15 countries during a series of bird flu outbreaks from 2004-2006.

At least 65 deaths have been reported in Yemen’s western coastal province of Hodeidah. The disease is thought to be chikungunya, though some medical officers dispute it. Symptoms of chikungunya include kidney failure, high temperature, diarrhea and vomiting. Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh has formed a committee to monitor the spread of the disease and the country’s authorities are working hard to keep it in check. Dr. Mohsen Al-Tobaiki, director of health in Jazan, said the Saudi authorities have been following developments across the border. Dr. Khaled Al-Mirghalani, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, and Dr. Ziyad Mishmish, undersecretary for preventive medicine, were unavailable for comment. A number of medical and environmental experts in Jazan said there is a possibility of the disease entering the Kingdom through unregistered migrants who do not carry health certificates proving they have taken necessary vaccinations. They added that at the moment the border provinces in the south of the Kingdom are free from the disease. According to Yemeni media, people in the Hodeidah area were shocked at the loss of life. Arafat Maki, a local journalist who contracted the illness, said the disease has caused panic in the area. “Lots of people are thought to have died. The health facilities in Hodeidah and hospitals are working overtime to cope with the influx of patients,” he said. The disease is locally known as Al-Mukarfess. Dr. Abdul Hakim Al-Khohlaini, manager of the epidemiological surveillance department at the Yemeni Ministry of Health, said that samples sent to Cairo for tests showed that the disease is chikungunya. He added that local doctors have also found other diseases in the area. “Forty-five percent of the cases are chikungunya, 10 percent malaria and the rest dengue fever,” he said. According to Al-Khohlaini, 61 people have died so far. “Some of the dead are very old and most of the cases haven't been verified by laboratories,” he said.

“Saudi health officials called us and inquired about the spread of a disease in the border provinces. We told them that it is chikungunya and assured them that the disease is under control and far away from the Saudi border,” he said. However, another medical source gave a different assessment of the situation. Dr. Najeeb Molha, head of the Hodeidah doctors' syndicate who is also working with disease-fighting teams, said the disease is not chikungunya. “Chikungunya doesn't claim this high number of lives. Chikungunya sprung up in the area in the last three months of 2010 and does not exist anymore,” he said. Molha said the symptoms of the disease are fever, diarrhea, renal failure and sudden increase in the number of white blood cells and granulocytes. “To my knowledge, 65 people have died because of the disease and 250 people are in hospitals. I think it is a kind of hemorrhagic fever. Our interference has helped in bringing down the number of victims and lessening the panic,” he said. Molha said the Yemeni Ministry of Health is reluctant to reveal the results of tests, something that Al-Khohlaini has denied. The director of Hodeidah's provincial health office refused to comment on the matter, saying he is waiting for the minister of health to complete his investigations. Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease with symptoms similar to dengue fever, occurs mainly in Africa, Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

American Mariam Soraya Vorster, a 33-year-old from Seattle working as a guide in Chiang Mai, died on January 11 - just over three weeks before 23-year-old Sarah died. Ms Vorster's husband Tony Pandolo told the Herald his wife was perfectly fit and healthy and became sick with symptoms of food poisoning before she died. "I kept asking about the health department, or what the next steps would be with the restaurant," Mr Pandolo said. "No one really seemed to know, and it turns out no one really did anything. "Soraya had an autopsy at University Hospital in Chiang Mai on January 12 or 13 and we still have no results." Ms Vorster's death is one of five in a six-week spell in Chiang Mai. Local woman Waraporn Pungmahisiranon died two days before Sarah and British pensioners George and Eileen Everitt died less than two weeks later. Those deaths were all in the same hotel - the Downtown Inn. Mr Pandolo said his wife was staying in a different hotel, but the symptoms were the same.

At a press conference in Bangkok yesterday, Chiang Mai Governor Pannada Disakul said: "We have to admit that these deaths coming one after another are nothing more than coincidence. "We have done and will continue to do our utmost to make tourists confident in our city." The press conference was told Mr and Mrs Everitt, 78 and 74, died within minutes of each other of heart attacks. The couple's son Stephen Everitt yesterday told the Herald that was not a believable explanation. "They had no history of heart problems or any other problems," said Mr Everitt from his home in Lincolnshire. "They were active and healthy for their age and it has come as a total shock. "And now they want me to believe they both had heart attacks at the same time. It doesn't make sense. How can it be coincidence?" Yesterday's press conference, which did not include details of Ms Vorster's death, was told tests were still being conducted into Sarah's death. Tests on tissue taken from Sarah Carter had been inconclusive and samples had been sent for analysis to the United States and Japan, said Dr. Pasakorn Akaraseri, of the Communicable Disease Department of Thailand's Ministry of Health. He said there was no evidence to suggest that any of the deaths were as a result of the guests eating food bought at the local market or on the street. Sarah and two friends - Amanda Eliason and Emma Langlands - became sick in the Downtown Inn in Chiang Mai on February 4. Sarah died in hospital two days later.

Amanda and Emma recovered and are now back in New Zealand. Richard Carter, Sarah's father, said the press conference was a "fob off". "It doesn't sound like there's any real investigation going on here. "You start to wonder how many other deaths there have been that are being swept under the carpet." Mr Carter said the New Zealand Government needed to put on more pressure to find out how many similar deaths there had been in the last few years so travellers could make informed decisions. "At the moment it's pot luck. People head off on holiday and then 'bang' they're dead." Foreign Minister Murray McCully said the comments from the press conference were "not wholly convincing and we intend to give them closer scrutiny". "We will look into the matter further. I gather there is still some work being done of a forensic nature of some samples and we are looking forward to seeing that material too. "It's clear that we need to ask some more questions." Asked if the Government would launch its own inquiry Mr McCully said that was too early to consider. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, let's just ask the questions methodically as we go forward... Clearly the obvious questions need to be asked and answered fully."

The disease was first reported on February 15. The virus is spreading in Aungmyetharsan, Chanayetharsan, Mahaaungmye, Chanmyatharsi, Pyigyitagun, Amrapura, and Madaya and Sagaing townships, officials said. “We have no treatment for this disease so we’re trying to control it by bio-technology preventive methods and by providing awareness campaigns to the townships’, said Tun Myint Soe. ‘We told people to spray insecticide and disinfectant around a pigsty, to boil their pig feed, to wear footwear before entering a pigsties and to use quick lime if they can not afford pesticide and disinfectant’. The World Health Organisation for Animal Health has issued an emergency warning in Burma on the spread of the disease, also known as Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus. The disease causes reproductive failure in breeding stock and respiratory tract illness in young pigs. According to Wikipedia, it was first reported in 1987 in North America and Central Europe. The disease is characterised by pigs walking with a limp and body tremors. Later, their flesh turns a brown colour and they die, said Tun Myint Soe. The Mandalay Division Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department is distributing insecticide and disinfectant to pig farms and small scale domestic pig owners free of charge and providing bio-technology control methods during field trips to inspect farms. The disease cannot be communicated to humans who consume the meat of infected pigs. Though the sale of pork has not been banned, residents in Mandalay told Mizzima that the consumption of pork has been effected.

    อาหารเป็นพิษที่เชียงใหม่ นักท่องเที่ยวตายไป 5

    Event: Epidemic Hazard
Location: Thailand Province of Chiang Mai Chiang Mai City
    Number of Deads: 5 person(s)

    Situation:

Travellers to Thailand are being warned to beware of food poisoning following a spate of mysterious deaths in a town popular with Australian tourists. Four tourists and a Thai tour guide have died in the hill town of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand over a five-week period this year. At least two of the victims had eaten Japanese food before they fell ill, while four were staying at the same hotel. A 33-year-old American woman, Soraya Pandola, was the first victim to die of swelling of the heart muscles - which can be caused by food poisoning - on January 11 when she became violently ill after eating at a Japanese restaurant. A 23-year-old New Zealand woman Sarah Carter, who had also eaten Japanese food, also died of swelling of the heart on February 5 - a day after Thai tour guide Waraporn Yingmahasawanont died in the room next door at the same hotel, the Downtown Inn, after suffering food poisoning. British pensioners George and Eileen Everitt were found dead in the same hotel three weeks later with enlargement of the heart muscles and blocked arteries.

Two friends of Ms Carter also fell ill but later recovered. Thai authorities are investigating the incidents, but have so far claimed the deaths are a coincidence. The husband of the first victim, Tony Pandola, said the idea the deaths were a coincidence was "ridiculous". He is furious that after the death of Ms Carter a health official was quoted as saying nothing like that had ever happened in Chiang Mai before. "Soraya is the only victim that I know of that wasn't staying at the Downtown Inn, but still died of eerily similar causes," Mr Pandola said. "As of now, there is still too much unknown about these deaths for me to offer any informed advice to travellers about how to stay completely safe. "My fear is that this will happen yet again if the Thai authorities continue to do nothing. "I greatly want to convince the Thai authorities that they will save far more face in the eyes of the international community by being proactive and cooperative, than by denying there is a problem - as they have thus far - and risking the lives of future travellers to the area." Mr Pandola said the mishandling of the incidents by Thai officials did not reflect the good nature of the Thai people. Australian-based Thailand tourism representative Pongsak Pongsak Kanittanon said authorities were still investigating whether the Thai tour guide had food poisoning before she checked in or she developed it after she got in at the hotel.

"The authority didn't get a full cooperation from the relatives, citing they don't want to be in the news," he said. "The English couple died of heart disease... the New Zealander died from a certain type of virus, the health authority has sent the sample to overseas lab for autopsy and still waiting for the result to come back but at the same time they are monitoring the two friends who are recovering from home. "Apparently these three girls are very careful of eating, the symptoms developed on the first day when they arrived in Chiang Mai and the staff took them to the hospital."

Tens of thousands of chickens will be culled as a result. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation said in a statement that bird flu was detected at a poultry farm in the municipality of Kapelle, located in the province of Zeeland. "It involves the H7 variant," it said. The Ministry said the exact subtype of the bird flu virus was not yet known, but noted that the low pathogenic variant is able to mutate into a highly pathogenic variant. "In the afternoon of March 25 it will be known whether this involves a low or highly pathogenic variant," the statement said. In compliance with European rules, all 127,500 chickens at the poultry farm will be culled on Friday and a movement ban for a radius of 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) has been announced and applies to poultry, eggs, poultry manure, poultry litter and poultry food. The Ministry said it believes the bird flu infection in Kapelle is likely the result of wild birds whose feces are contaminated with the virus. Humans do not frequently get infected, depending on which variant is involved, but there are fears the bird flu virus could mutate into a type that can easily spread among humans, causing a deadly pandemic. In 2003, the Netherlands was hit hard by an epidemic of the H7N7 bird flu strain, resulting in the cull of more than 25 million birds. It also infected at least 89 people, all except three who had contact with poultry. One of the victims, a veterinarian, died after having close contact with infected poultry.
