Ānanda: "But, lord, what course should be followed with regard to the Tathagata's body?"
The Buddha: "The course they follow with regard to the body of a wheel-turning monarch, Ānanda, is the course that should be followed with regard to the body of the Tathagata."
Ānanda: "And what, lord, is the course they follow with regard to the body of a wheel-turning monarch?"
The Buddha: "The Tathagata's body, Ānanda, should be dealt with in the same way as that of a wheel-turning monarch. For what reason is a Tathagata, worthy & rightly self-awakened, worthy of a burial mound (stūpa)?
[At the thought,] 'This is the burial mound of a Tathagata, worthy & rightly self-awakened,' many people will brighten their minds. Having brightened their minds there, then — on the break-up of the body, after death — they will reappear in a good destination, the heavenly world. It is for this reason that a Tathagata, worthy & rightly self-awakened, is worthy of a burial mound."
