South Bz: The earth's magnetic field (Bz) has been tilting sharply south on Friday afternoon and this could help stir up minor geomagnetic storming conditions. Be on the lookout for Aurora at high latitudes.

A VHF Aurora Opening is in progress. Many stations are being worked on 6 Meters here in the northern parts of North America and the DX Cluster also indicates AU contacts also being made in Northern EU.
X1.5 Flare Causes Small CME: It appears the solar flare that took place late last night created a faint and possibly earth directed Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). Click HERE to watch the event. This plasma cloud could reach earth by the weekend and stir up some activity at high latitudes.


X1.5 Solar Flare - Just as active Sunspot 1165 has disappeared onto the western limb, The second largest Solar Flare of Cycle 24 thurs far has taken place around huge Sunspot 1166. The X1.5 event event peaked at 23:16 UTC Wednesday evening and caused a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout on the sunlit side of earth.

Solar Update - Both Sunspots 1164 and 1165 have rotated onto the western limb and out of direct earth view. The main features on the visible solar disk today are big sunspot 1166 which is capable of producing atleast M-Class flares and Sunspot 1169 which is located just to the east of 1166.


Minor CME Impact: The ACE Spacecraft detected a minor shock from an incoming CME during the early hours Thursday morning. The solar wind increased somewhat and the Bz was tilting sharply south and this did stir up very minor activity at high latitudes.

CME IMPACT: [/FONT]A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on March 10th around 0630 UT. The impact, albeit weak, did provoke geomagnetic activity around the poles. High-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]X-FLARE: [/FONT]March 9th ended with a powerful solar flare. Earth-orbiting satellites detected an X1.5-class explosion from behemoth sunspot 1166 around 2323 UT. A movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows a bright flash of UV radiation plus some material being hurled away from the blast site:

UPDATE (March 10 @ 1800 UT): Newly-arriving coronagraph data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory show no bright CME emerging from this eruption. Some material was surely hurled in our direction, but probably not enough for significant Earth-effects. ​

After four years without any X-flares, the sun has produced two of the powerful blasts in less than one month: Feb. 15th and March 9th. This continues the recent trend of increasing solar activity, and shows that Solar Cycle 24 is heating up. NOAA forecasters estimate a 5% chance of more X-flares during the next 24 hours.

COINCIDENCES: [/FONT]Many readers have asked if this week's terrible earthquake in Japan was connected to the contemporaneous geomagnetic storms of March 10th and 11th. In short, no. There is no known, credible evidence of solar activity triggering earthquakes. Moreover, in the historical record, there are thousands of examples of geomagnetic storms without earthquakes, and similar numbers of earthquakes without geomagnetic storms. The two phenomena are not linked.

การมีพายุแม่เหล็กโลกแต่ละครั้งอาจมีส่วนประกอบข้างในไม่เหมือนกัน บางครั้งอาจไม่มีตัวที่ทำให้เกิดแผ่นดินไหว บางครั้งก็มี เพราะฉะนั้นต้องเก็บข้อมูลไปอย่าด่วนสรุป :boo:
